Doctor of Computer Science from the University of Salford in England. Subject teacher at the Tecnológico de Monterrey campus Cuernavaca and the Institute of Renewable Energies of the UNAM. Full-time researcher at the Institute for Electrical Research, now the National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energies, INEEL from 1983 to 2019, retirement date. He directed undergraduate, master’s and doctoral theses. Author of multiple publications on Artificial Intelligence applications in the energy sector.

Esteban Palomo, PhD.
Researcher of MIND – Research Group

Esteban José Palomo was born in 1982. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees (with honors) in computer engineering from the University of Malaga (Spain), in 2008 and 2013, respectively. For his Ph.D. Thesis, he was given the Extraordinary Doctorate Award from the same university. He joined the Department of Computer Languages and Computer Science, University of Malaga in 2007. In 2015, he joined the School of Mathematical Science and Information Technology at University of Yachay Tech (Ecuador). He got an appointment as Adjunct Faculty at the Simon A. Levin Mathematical, Computational and Modeling Sciences Center (MCMSC) at the Arizona State University (USA) in 2017. That year he joined again the Department of Computer Languages and Computer Science at the University of Malaga, where he is currently an Associate professor. His current research interests include unsupervised learning, self-organization, data mining, image/video processing, network security, and deep learning.

Massimo Palme, PhD.
Researcher of MIND – Research Group

Massimo Palme is a Materials Engineer and a Doctor in Architecture, Energy and the Environment. He is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Researcher at the Technological Center for Water in the Desert at the Universidad Católica del Norte in Antofagasta, Chile. Since 2006, he has been conducting research on the impact of climate change on the built environment, the management of natural resources, the sustainability and energy efficiency of buildings and cities. He has numerous competitive projects and publications in magazines, books and conference proceedings. He is the secretary in Chile of the International Association for Landscape Ecology and the International Association for Building Performance Simulation.

Alberto Reyes Ballesteros, PhD.
Researcher of MIND – Research Group

Mechanical-Electrician Engineer and Master in Artificial Intelligence from the Universidad Veracruzana Xalapa-México (1990,1999) and Doctor in Computer Science from ITESM Cuernavaca-México (2007). He completed his doctoral stay at the University of British Columbia Canada (2004) and the postdoct at the IST of the University of Lisbon Portugal (2009). He began his professional career in 1990 at the CFE «Los Humeros» Geothermal Power Plant, later joining INEEL where he has developed national and international artificial intelligence projects for the electricity and energy sector. He was a Prometheus researcher at the National Institute of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies (INER) of Ecuador. His areas of interest are: data processing and mining, machine learning, and the use of probabilistic graphical models for forecasting and decision making. He is currently part of the faculty of the INEEL graduate center, a member of the Mexican Academy of Computing (AMEXCOMP), the Mexican Society of Artificial Intelligence (SMIA) and the National System of Researchers (SNI).

Computer systems engineer from Comitan Technological Institute, Comitan Chiapas, Mexico (2010). Received MSc degrees in Applied Computing Optimization from the Autonomous University of State Morelos, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico (2019). I am an analytical and creative person dedicated to the development of custom software and expert systems for scientific research, technological developments and the energy industry. I have collaborated in different software development and data quality projects, acquiring and demonstrating knowledge in different subjects of computer science and in the area of Artificial Intelligence, as well as an initiative to propose lines of development of the developed software systems. I have knowledge of Machine Learning algorithms and probabilistic graphic models. I have participated as author and co-author in articles in indexed journals and in national and international conferences and I am co-author of a book chapter on data quality.

Graduated from the Autonomous Juárez University of Tabasco with the title of Environmental Engineer and student attached to the Master’s and Doctorate Program in Environmental Engineering – Water of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. I have participated in academic stays at the National Polytechnic Institute and at the Mexican Institute of Water Technology. I feel the faithful concern of getting involved in projects with contributions to science, research and development aimed at a scheme that integrates at the same time a harmonization in the Nature-Man relationship. As an environmental engineer trained to solve water problems, I have added experience in the integrated agro-industrial water management, wastewater treatment through conventional and advanced oxidation processes (electrochemistry), emerging contaminants, water treatment plant design, renewable energy microgrid design for the supply of water treatment plants, evaluation and restoration of aquatic bodies and measurement of flows in open channels.

Solmar Varela, PhD.
Researcher of MIND – Research Group

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Physics at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) in 2016. Then, the title of Doctorate in Sciences, Physical mention in the same house of studies. I held a position as Professor and Researcher in the Physics department of the UCV in the period 2010-2017. I spent two years as a training professional at the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research, working on the Molecular Spintronics project at the Physics Center. Since 2017 I have been a Professor and Researcher at the School of Chemical Sciences and Engineering. In 2018, I participated as a collaborator in the winning project of the CEDIA-CEPRAXII_2018 call, entitled «Mechanical Spectroscopy: Transport and Interaction Matter Radiation». I collaborate externally with researchers in Germany, Spain and the USA. Within my research area, we seek to make an analytical, computational and experimental description of the studied systems.

Ignacio Chang, PhD.

I have a PhD in Automation and Robotics obtained in 2010, a joint doctoral program between the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Technological University of Panama (UTP), I have worked at the UTP since 1984. I have held various positions as Career Coordinator, Dean in Charge and Vice Dean Academic in charge of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, as well as Director of Research at the University. I have participated in research projects, with international and national financing, related to the mobility of people with visual or hearing disabilities for early warning systems, movements in public passenger transport or inside buildings. In addition, I organize various events that generate synergies: Symposium on Intelligent Control Systems SSCI. Annual activity, the first was held in August 2014. FEMA Energy and Environment Forum, with a certain frequency. The first was held in 2011. Also a space for discussion and search for solutions to problems of organized civil society: Science, Technology and Society Forum CITyS. The first forum was held in June 2017. Latin America Congress on Automation and Robotics LACAR. Itinerant Congress in Latin America, the first was held in February 2017. Currently I am the Vice Dean of Research, Postgraduate and Extension Elected and in charge of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Technological University of Panama.

Javier Sánchez, PhD.

Javier Sánchez Galán received his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the Technological University of Panama in 2006. In 2007 he was awarded a scholarship from the Panamanian government (IFARHU-SENACYT) to pursue postgraduate studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. At this University he obtained his Master’s Degree in Computer Science (Bioinformatics option) in 2010 and completed his doctorate in Experimental Medicine in the subject of Chemo-informatics applied to maternal-fetal health in 2015. He currently works as a professor-researcher at the Technological University of Panama (UTP) in the Faculty of Computer Systems Engineering, where he is coordinator of the Research Group in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (GIBBS), and is also an adjunct researcher at the Research Institute Advanced Scientists and High Technology Services (INDICASAT AIP). His research interests are focused on developing innovative approaches applying algorithms and computation for the analysis of massive biological, medical, environmental and agricultural data. Dr. Sánchez-Galán, actively participates in the Panamanian scientific community. It is part of the National System of Researchers (SNI) of SENACYT. He is a member of the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science (APANAC), of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) and a member with a «Senior» degree from the Society of Engineers in Medicine and Biology (EMBS) of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and Electronic (IEEE). In addition, he serves as Panamanian representative and Vice President of the Central American Network for Bioinformatics and Biocomputing (Biocanet) https://www.biocanet.com/, a network that promoted Bioinformatics, Biosciences and Biomedical Sciences programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in the region Central America (Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama).

My name is Israel Pineda, currently, I work in the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at Yachay Tech University as a Research Professor. Previously, I worked in the Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Lab at Chonbuk National University, South Korea. My research is about the Level Set Method and its use in scientific computing, computer graphics, physics-based simulations, computer vision, image processing, AI, HPC, and optimization. Fernando Alexis Gonzales Zubiate.
Researcher of MIND – Research Group

Dr. Gonzales obtained a bachelor degree in Biology at Federico Villarreal University from Peru. He did his master and doctoral studies in Biochemistry at University of São Paulo, during this time he studied ribosomal RNA processing in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Years later, being a postdoc at the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), he studied the function of proteins involved in pseudouridylation of rRNA. Continuing his research, as postdoc at University of Aarhus in Denmark, he studied the mechanisms involved in the maturation of mRNAs and their transport to the cytoplasm. Back to Brazil, Dr. Gonzales started a postdoc at the University of São Paulo developing the research project «Biochemical and Structural Characterization of yeast Exosome Interactions with regulatory proteins of its activity”. At the present time, Dr. Gonzales hold a position of Researcher Professor and Head of the Departament of Biology at School of Biological Sciences and Engineering at University of Science and Technology Yachay Tech in Ecuador. Dr. Gonzales research is focused in: – Using Molecular biology in the study of control and detection of pesticides in Ecuador – Study of nuclear transport of proteins and how failures would lead to affect more complex processes in the cell and consequently severe diseases in humans.

Ricardo Silva is an Electronic Engineer with a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Universidad Simón Bolívar in Venezuela, with a Doctorate in Integrated Biosciences with a Neuroscience Mention from Penn State University in the United States. Ricardo Silva is also a Certified Clinical Engineer and in that role, he currently serves as the Chairman of the Commission for the Accreditation of Clinical Engineers (HTCC). Ricardo has always operated between academia and industry, with experience in the process of transforming research into innovation. He has held multiple academic and business positions. He is currently a postgraduate professor at Villanova University, where he teaches medical informatics and Director of Innovation at Alluriam Health and Wellness, an innovative company in the health sector in the United States of America.

José Castillo
Researcher of MIND – Research Group

Dr. José A. Castillo is a microbiologist, he has worked conducting basic and applied scientific research at the plant-bacteria interface for several years. Using genomics, bioinformatics, and tools from molecular biology he studies the evolutionary trends of selected bacterial pathogens to understand their virulence factors and evolution. His main research is focused on a bacterial pathogen called Ralstonia solanacearum that causes significant losses to agricultural production worldwide. However, he has also investigated other bacterial pathogens such as Agrobacterium. Over the years, he has obtained funds from national and international agencies to finance his research, which has allowed him to lead a research group in molecular microbiology, write several scientific articles in international journals, guide undergraduate and graduate students, and establish academic ties with colleagues from universities and centers around the world. For a period of three years, he worked as a consultant for public policy planning and strategic research for the Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation of Ecuador.This experience has led him to acquire a deep understanding of higher education in Ecuador and Latin America.
